Qiu Xiaofei
"Artist Case Study Exhibition"
September 12, 2020 – January 9, 2021

The New Century Contemporary Art Foundation is thrilled to present a solo exhibition exploring the work of artist Qiu Xiaofei. Over the four-month run, the show will feature two distinct exhibition structures and narrative approaches, showcasing Qiu’s latest creations while also tracing his artistic journey over the past two decades—a spiral path marked by relentless exploration and a deep quest for the very essence of painting.
Qiu Xiaofei’s creative starting point often stems from personal family memories and everyday experiences, yet he never stops at these surface-level depictions—he instead delves deeper into the subconscious currents hidden beneath appearances, exploring through thought and consciousness.
In the first phase of the exhibition (September 12 – October 21, 2020), Qiu Xiaofei’s latest painting, *Chi*, is presented in a focused and immersive manner. Amidst a sudden upheaval that has reshaped everyone’s lives, the artist channels his profound reflections on humanity and the state of the world into vibrant colors and evocative imagery. Here, themes of growth and decay, splendor and brutality, coexist in stark tension, creating a palpable sense of conflict that resonates across the canvas. This same emotional intensity is further amplified by the contrast between the bright, open gallery space and the dim, weathered corridors that lead visitors deeper into the exhibit.
In the second phase of the exhibition (October 31, 2020 – January 9, 2021), multiple groups of works from different periods of the artist’s career were displayed in a non-linear, interconnected arrangement, aiming to highlight how the artist’s creative journey involved both forward momentum and reflective moments—constantly pushing beyond self-imposed boundaries.
For Qiu Xiaofei, the relationship between the objective and spiritual worlds, as well as between the real and imaginary realms, is in constant flux and seamless integration—yet painting remains the key to understanding the world, and even to creating worlds that we’ve yet to fathom.
