For a European curator, looking at Duan Jianyu's paintings has always raised questions about the possibility of understanding. Her paintings are enigmatic in themselves. But this is only one aspect. On the other hand, they communicate with various viewers in various ways and ask: in today's world of global imagery, how much meaning can be transmitted between images of different cultures? Today's Chinese painting is between various categories of painting and visual culture, including various appropriations of Chinese tradition, Western and modernist traditions, and the latest Eastern paradigm. Today, the visual world is like a broken mirror, and painting makes it even more incredible. Watching Duan Jianyu's paintings reminds me of my compatriot Paul. Celan's poems, both equally full of puzzles. Celan has successfully transformed special events and personal encounters into a universal poetic flavor. Therefore, we should conduct such an experiment: to interpret the images and metaphors in front of us in another context is like to interpret this puzzle with another puzzle.
Duan Jianyu was born in Zhengzhou, Henan Province in 1970.
