The New Century Art Foundation will present a case-study exhibition of artist Qiu Xiaofei. Over the four months during of this exhibition, we have adopted two different types of exhibition structures and narratives to present Qiu Xiaofei’s recent works and a spiraling path he has taken over the last two decades of painting practice exploring and pursuing the meaning of the medium.
Qiu Xiaofei’s practice, often inspired by memories of his family and everyday experience yet unhinged by these immediate images, explores the stream of consciousness and thoughts beneath these phenomena.
The first chapter of the exhibition (September 12 – October 21, 2020) focuses on Qiu Xiaofei’s most recent painting, Red. With this sudden advent of an event that has spun everyone's life into the vortex, the artist's senses of the people and the condition of the world transform into colors and forms, in which life and death, the splendid and cruel, and tension extend throughout his canvas. Such tension is equally apparent in the bright exhibition space and the dim old corridor.
The second chapter of this exhibition (October 31 – January 9, 2021) will sample works from different phases of the artist's practice in a non-linear fashion, aiming to reveal the artist's forward-thinking and revisits one's practice as means of evolving in one's practice.
For Qiu Xiaofei, the objective and intellectual worlds, the real and the imaginary, continue to transform and integrate, and painting is the path through which we understand or even create the world we have yet fathomed.
